An ammo dump in Siberia is on fire and popping off all sorts of ordnance. This is one hell of a kaboom. Just check out the blast wave.

I was reminded of the explosions in Tianjin, China a couple of years ago.

Is that supposed to be Pearl Harbor? I’m pretty sure the Spruance (or maybe Kidd?) class was not there, unless there was a rather extreme Final Countdown situation going on. Lazy filmmaking, when there are so many more WWII-looking ships around.

Yeah, when you start moving clouds around, you know something big just went boom. Doesn't look like any of them were big enough to register on seismometers though.

I hadn’t seen the footage from next day. That event was unreal.

Yeah that was Michael Bays attempt at a historical movie. I don’t know why I said Syrian when the post said Siberian ammo dump. Lazy commenting to complement Bay’s lazy filmmaking.

That film is the epitome of laziness. Here’s a frame from Doolittle taking off from Hornet . What is wrong with this picture?

Here’s the video.

Hmm, yeah that doesn’t appear to be a WWII carrier. I think a Kitty Hawk class (based on the little notch at the end of the angled deck) ?

Getting the real deal with a non-angled deck would have been hard (though an amphibious assault ship would probably have looked closer), though if they wanted a real WWII-era carrier, they probably could have rented Oriskany or Coral Sea for next to nothing, given that they would be shortly sunk and scrapped respectively.

They could have built a fake flight deck at an airbase and done everything else CGI. There’s already a ton of shitty CGI in that film. At least they painted a stripe on the deck, but there were two stripes, one for the nose wheel and one for the left main wheel.

Kinja'd!!!

And having Alec Baldwin pay Doolittle is ludicrous. But I guess short bald guys aren’t heroic enough. I get it, it’s not necessarily a documentary. But they could maybe have tried just a little harder.

It was when I saw the movie Pearl Harbor, that I learned that something could both suck and blow at simultaneously .

the carrier is anchored (I think) and it has a more modern flight deck. What else did I miss?

Most obvious is the angled carrier deck, which didn’t appear until the 1950s. The stripe on the deck is also wrong. There were two stripes, one for the nose gear and one for the left main wheel. This was so the wing of the B-25 wouldn’t strike Hornet’s island. The carrier in the movie also has steam catapults, which didn’t show up until the 1950s.

Kinja'd!!!

I understand that the vast majority of people wouldn’t notice or care. B ut with all the CGI available, you’d think they’d at least try to get it right.
